The longer one works in the world of creativity, the more you strive for a "distillation" of sorts. The search for that essence, that purity of an idea. In a perfect world that should be a simple process, but we know that is often not the case. There are obstacles, roadblocks, etc to be navigated through. The trick is to be flexible and open to the possibilities as they arise, and to act on them when they do. Here's to facing those challenges this week, and coming out the other side all the better. Its the Labor Day holiday today here in the US, so in that spirit I'd like to give a shout-out to those that work in a trade. It's wonderful to see young people recognizing the value that this work can bring, especially to those that don't feel university is the right path for them. I grew up surrounded by trades people, so it is a world I know quite well. There's nothing like finishing a solid days work, with a happy client/customer... and no tuition loan to pay back! I've always had an issue with the word 'better' wh

I've always had an issue with the word 'better' when it comes to making records. Back in the day it could be downright confrontational, and I can think of more than a few times where the guitar player argued with the piano player on who was going to solo on the song, when we only had one track left on the tape to record a solo. Sometimes what was 'better' was to just let whomever was paying the studio bill decide on what was best. Confrontation can be uncomfortable, for sure, BUT it can make for some better records too. Now that we can save every take of everything, I can't say that is better...far from it. People think I'm kidding when I say "I don't like options", but I really don't. The way I look at it now is everything is a moment in time. It's who you are, why you are, and the choices you make. Now. Unless you're a practitioner of this philosophy, it can be incredibly difficult to let go and just go with it. If you're a songwriter, you have not written your best song yet. Substitute the role and the goal, and you see what I mean. The trick is to keep moving, creating and, honestly, living. #creativity #artist #moment #time
